It will be hot and cruel

at Willow Springs in August.

The temperature will hit one hundred and ten

to one hundred and twenty

degrees Fahrenheit

and a hot wind will blow abrasive dust

across the desert hills.

It is recommended

that one not wear black colored shoes

in such weather

as the sunlight will heat them

to the point of pain

and a body will burn through

a twelve pack of bottled water

each day.

But we will still appear on Sunday morning

to practice

and then race our machines

under the screaming sun.
